Works by Maya Gerr and her students

I teach adults how to paint and I believe that technique is important, but the idea and individuality matter more.
Same setup, shared materials. Each painting has its own face. Just like people do.
Creativity is always about the person and that is what makes art alive.

Maya

A few years ago, I took up something quite unexpected for myself. I started teaching adults how to paint. Since I began learning after already hatching out of childhood, it was not too hard to imagine being in my students shoes. Well, in my female students shoes, to be precise 🙂

For some reason, men do not seem to join my classes. I hope the issue lies in the process and not in the teacher.

As an artist with some experience behind me, I tell beginners of all levels that technique is important, but the idea is even more important. It is the idea that gives individuality and originality.

And there I am, rushing around between my wonderful ladies, guiding the creation of the same still life in fundamentally different styles because everyone likes something different. The rules are the same, the setup is the same, and often even the materials are the same. Yet each artwork has its own face. Just like people do. And the joy this process gives me is incredible.

Although sometimes the whole thing smells a bit like light schizophrenia or something even worse. Because in my classes a realist, an impressionist, an expressionist and heaven knows who else live inside me.
