Have you ever created a picture with fabric — without sewing a single stitch?
Join us for a hands-on introduction to Kinusaiga, a fascinating Japanese art technique often described as “patchwork without a needle.” Using small pieces of colorful fabric, we will create textured pictures by carefully tucking the edges of the fabric into pre-cut grooves. No needle. No sewing machine. And no previous experience required.
This class is designed specifically for beginners, so we will work with relatively simple designs that allow everyone to learn the basic technique, experiment with colors and patterns, and complete a beautiful project to take home.
Kinusaiga is a Japanese textile art that developed from the tradition of giving beautiful fabrics a second life. Precious silk kimonos were not simply thrown away when they were no longer worn. Pieces of their fabric could be carefully reused in decorative artwork.
Artists selected pieces according to their colors, patterns, shading, and textures and fitted them together to form an image. Instead of stitching the pieces together, the edges of the fabric were tucked into grooves cut into the base.
Modern Kinusaiga uses a much wider variety of fabrics and materials, but the basic idea remains the same: turning small pieces of fabric into a layered, dimensional picture without sewing.
